DuKane ABATE 2020 Election Results

We have hosted our last meeting of the year, and our yearly DuKane board election along with it! These are the winners:

  • Vice President – Hej Hog
  • Treasurer – Tina Hejnar
  • Legislative Coordinator – Randy Ramey

This means that Tina and Randy will continue to serve in their respective board positions and that we have a new vice president for the chapter. We welcome Hej to this position on the board, and we appreciate the contributions that Joe and Linda Barnes, who are retiring from their positions, have made as our board members.

DuKane ABATE 2020 Board Elections

The United States is not the only body having elections this year: the DuKane Chapter of ABATE has an election of its own. On November 17th, the DuKane Chapter will host a membership meeting at which ABATE members can nominate candidates or be nominated for these positions:

  • Vice President
  • Treasurer
  • Legislative Coordinator
  • PR Coordinator
  • Membership Coordinator
  • Independent Representative #2

The Treasurer and Legislative positions are mandatory for this chapter. As such, we will need at least one candidate to run for each of those positions, and the incumbents, Treasurer Tina Hejnar and Legislative Coordinator Randy Ramey, are willing to do so. If you are a member of DuKane ABATE and want to run for one of the listed positions, you must attend our meeting on November 17th to be nominated.

At our December meeting, we will need members to attend and vote for the nominees for each position. And no, mail-in voting is not an option.

Toy & Food Run Volunteers Meeting

Hello, everyone!

Our 34th Annual DuKane ABATE Toy And Food Run is almost here. We have been working hard in the background getting everything in order for the greatest motorcycling event of 2020. We cannot pull it off without you.

Please come to our Volunteers Meeting on Monday, October 5th, at 7:00 PM. It will be held at the Winner’s Circle Bar & Grill located on the grounds at Sycamore Speedway (50W226 Old State Rd, Maple Park, IL 60151). Brett will be serving up some of his famous chili as we finalize the details.

We look forward to seeing you all there!

-Chris Hansen and Chris Newman

Early Voting in DuPage County & Kane County

To voters in DuPage County and Kane County:

Polling places in DuPage County and Kane County are about to start opening for early voting. So if Election Day is a workday for you, or if you would prefer to vote in person when the lines (and the risk of catching COVID-19 because of them) are small, you can visit the polls within a 40-day period before the election.

A few locations will be open for early voting on September 24th: the Kane County Clerk’s Office and the Aurora Satellite Office in Kane County, and the DuPage Fairgrounds in DuPage County. There are many other polling places that will open 25 days later, on October 19th.

With the links below, you can look up where these locations are and what their opening and closing times are.

32 Years of Giving: It’s What We Do

ATTENTION: ALL AREA MOTORCYCLISTS AND SUPPORTERS OF MOTORCYCLING

The DuKane A.B.A.T.E. Toy and Food Run enters its 32nd year on Sunday, October 14, 2018. Thousands of motorcyclists will once again gather from multiple registration and collection points, all leading to a central staging area in Elburn for a fully escorted parade to Batavia. The parade is led by none other than Santa Claus, who will be joined by area lawmakers, including Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner, himself an avid motorcyclist. Once on the event grounds, at the Batavia VFW on River Street, attendees will be treated to a day of music, food, and fun. Toy and food donations collected for this charity event will benefit 18+ local charities. Registration activities begin as early as 9:30 am and the event will draw to a close at 6:00 pm.

Anybody who misses this year’s event will miss out indeed.

Knuckleheads

There’s something about seeing, hearing, and feeling all those motorcycles rolling into the parade staging area surrounding Knucklehead’s Tavern and Schmidt’s Towne Tap in Elburn. The people-watching opportunities alone are worth the price of admission, which is just $10 per person, plus an unwrapped new toy and/or a non-perishable food item. As all those bikes accumulate and the riders gather in anticipation of rolling out in parade formation, a live concert plays out right behind Knuckleheads, for the pleasure of all who gather round.

BAND=Joker's Rival

Performing in Elburn this year will be none other than Joker’s Rival, a local crowdpleaser who will be covering great songs by Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, AC/DC, Cheap Trick, and more.

BAND=Eliminator

As the motorcycle parade concludes on the grounds of the Batavia VFW, attendees will be thoroughly entertained by The Eliminator Band, Chicagoland’s popular ZZ Top Tribute Band. Eliminator brings their act all over the country and can be sure to keep everyone on their feet!

BAND=Unforgiven

Also performing on the main stage at Batavia VFW will be Unforgiven, the one band that decidedly can turn any song into a Metallica tune. This band will rock you all day!

 [UPDATE: Due to illness, Unforgiven will be unable to appear on October 14. In their place, Chicagoland’s  great rock and roll band Centerfold will be performing classic rock hits and current pop favorites to the delight of the crowd.]

The March of Flags presentation in conjunction with the Star Spangled Banner is among the most moving moments of the day. You have to experience it and see the faces of so many military veterans in attendance to understand. And of course, this being an election year, there will be politicians doing what they do best. But let us not forget what this annual DuKane A.B.A.T.E. Toy and Food Run means to so many local charities that benefit from the generosity of so many people.

When it comes to passing the hat and providing support to those in need, one would be hard pressed to find a more charitable sort than the motorcycling community. But while most motorcycle-oriented fundraising events are geared toward a single cause, the donations collected for the DuKane A.B.A.T.E. Toy and Food Run will benefit 18 or more local charitable organizations immediately following the event.

VFW Crowd 1

For each of these reasons and more, the DuKane A.B.A.T.E. Toy and Food Run is an event that you should not miss. Come by motorcycle, come by car, walk if you have to, but please join us on October 14 for this event.

Kneeze in the Breeze: Weather Watch

Kneeze FlierWe have had some positively awesome Kneeze in the Breeze ride events over the years, some drier than others. It really is an awesome annual event, put on by the DuKane Chapter to raise money for its Downed Rider Fund. The route and destination change each year, which makes the run all the more interesting. 10410446_10201392084884211_1274440694523452056_n

This year’s run promises to be one for the books, if Ma Nature decides to play nice. Departing from Heritage Harley-Davidson in Lisle, the run covers over 140 miles, many of those miles following Historic Route 66, and winds up at Kick’s Bar and Grill in Towanda.

As we enter the weekend, the area weather forecast seems less than perfect. We hope it changes — it often does around here — but as always, the safety of our riders must come first. Therefore, we ask that all of our riders monitor our event web page OR our Facebook Event page OR our Twitter feed for last-minute updates. Again, WE WILL HAVE A FANTASTIC RIDE IF WEATHER PERMITS, but the safety of our riders is our first concern.

Inaugural ABC Event Proves Successful

BOD at ABCThe DuKane Chapter Board of Directors had wanted to replace their Laugh Into Spring comedy night event with something that would be new, fun, and interactive, all while raising money for the chapter’s Downed Rider Fund. Over the winter season, chapter VP Joe Barnes, along with fellow board members Linda Barnes and Chris Hansen, began toying with the idea of a bowling night. They researched and contacted area venues and then developed a slate of activities, fees, and prizes for such an event, ultimately creating what would be called the ABATE Bowling Classic or “ABC” held for the first time on March 30 of this year. But would anybody come to an after-hours bowling event being held by a motorcycle rights organization, and on Good Friday to boot?

As it turns out, over 50 bowlers participated in this inaugural event, raising hundreds of dollars for the Downed Rider Fund and making it likely that the ABC will be held again next year. We had younger bowlers, older bowlers, first-time bowlers, and seasoned pro tournament bowlers. All seemed to have a great time. The Brunswick Zone Glendale Heights Lanes provided friendly, efficient service while selling food and beverages to our participants.

As promised, a  9 Pin-No-Tap Tournament was held, on separate lanes from the just-for-fun bowling contingency. Our competition was graced by some pretty serious bowling talent. In fact, the tournament winner, Paul Kaminski, bowled a 300 (perfect game) to take first prize. Nice job, Paul!

The DuKane Chapter’s Downed Rider Fund was established in 2014 to help DuKane members and/or immediate family member(s) with an immediate financial need caused when the member is injured or killed while riding their motorcycle. Benefit recipients are not obligated to pay back the one-time disbursement, although some choose to do so. The DuKane Chapter holds at least one event per year for the sole purpose of raising money for the Downed Rider Fund.

Cute TowelMore photos from this event have been posted on the DuKane Chapter’s Facebook page, for your viewing pleasure. If you participated in our inaugural ABATE Bowling Classic, thank you for coming out! We hope to see even more bowlers there next year.

Information on future DuKane Chapter events can be found on the DuKane website Events page and regular updates will always be provided via our Facebook page and our Twitter feed.
